Forum: etree Subject: Titos take on Alleged"kind rainbow scumbags"

My name is Tito,
i am the guy writing derrogatory things about Phil and Friends. How dare
you censor me.I am giving my opinion, which is only WORDS,that this band Sucks shit.If you only want smiley faces, and rainbows and waterfalls on your reviews, then dont call them reviews.I never started anything with anybody unless they fired first with comments like"get off our bus bro"or"you ruined our scene".Or,as Brad says,"this is comming from a little kid that has never seen the Dead"
i saw the Dead 329 times. If your offended by words, then your right wing asses can leave my country.

Back to guys like me me"ruining the scene"at Dead shows.-
The scene,to me,was going to a concert with a ticket that i paid for for and feeling safe and sanitary. If anyone has ever been on tour, you know there was a bunch of filthy scumbags, aggressive panhandlers,VERY shady drug deals,Very unsanitary conditions there was lice and odor everywhere.Call me UNKIND,but to me,this was ruining the so called "scene".Almost every show i went to,someone was freaking out on shitty mass produced LSD,taking their clothes off and generally going insane with no clue as to what they were doing. And the next morning at some public rest stop(loitering of course)they were telling everyone how "high"they got the night before.Ill bet almost Everyone here,if you were on tour you vended in some way.Im not saying im against vending or even drug use at shows, but the Grateful Dead WAS,as stated by THEM,so if you wanted to see them continue to do what they do,i think that their wishes should be respected to a point and not ignored. The grateful Dead would come to a town and it would be flooded with(shitty) LSD and other drugs for months.THESE ARE THE REASONS THE GD WAS BANNED FROM PLACES AND THERE WAS INCREASED POLICE AT OTHERS!!!!!! It wasnt because of "Jersey Drunks".My personal politics are not anyones business, but i will say this,i am Pro-Marijuana.I Do NOT want my 13 yr old Daughter smoking Marijuana. If She went to an 89 GD show in Philly, she would see open drug use. This is why i wouldnt let my daughter go to a Dead show.I did let her go to OzzFest.Do the math.
So just because i didnt pretend to be someone i wasnt, running around with matted hair and ridiculous apparel such as dresses and underear,i feel i can sleep at night just fine(with my crew-cut and wifebeater T-shirt)Knowing i had nothing to do with the demise of the "scene".Its my fucking bus,YOU get off

Hello LMA community,
I would like to compliment you for not rising to flame bait and trolls. There have been many instances when I have applauded your restraint to the internal etree mailing list. If someone is being inappropriate in the reviews or forums, I know it's difficult, but please bite your tongue and email us at info@archive.org and we will do our best to assess the situation and deal with it immediately.

In all honesty, Molly, this site has attracted a lot of new users in the past 3-6 months and probably most of them, including me (who started the whole string yesterday) probably did not realize where we should direct issues like these. It was just natural to gravitate towards the forum. Diana & Brad recommended yesterday using the error report, but now you're saying to e-mail info@archive.org . Which is it?

Well, from a common sense perspective, we can all be right. :) Re forums there's no "error report" link for those so info@ would be the way to point something out.

Re reviews or indeed any item-related problem, perhaps you could call attention to a general and/or specific problem by emailing info@, *and* add supporting, specific pointers by error reports. Like, to info@ your example message in that situation might be, "I call your attention to [problem x, explained]. I have left related reports on 50 items in the last 2 days for your consideration. I'm patron [x]."

These "discusions" use to be safely buried in Grateful Dead reviews section. They will now forever dominate/polute/enliven the forum due to moderators request that we all begin to use same rather than "reviews" section. ENJOY

My bad. guess it wasn't moderators who had the great idea of posting band rants on Forum , so I shouldn't give the wrong people credit.I thought the MD dude was moaning about people bringing things to the forum that were once buried in GD reviews, in responce to others requests that they do so. Quotes below are the ones I was thinkin of and realize the main advcocate for same was timepilot NOT Diana Hamilton.

My argument is that his and other's "reviews" are not actual reviews of the shows, but opinions about the bands in general. Which is great and needs to be discussed! But, these discussions should be for the forum section of the site (like how we are discussing this now).

Again, I am 100% for speaking your mind, that is not the point I am trying ot make. Just keep reviews strictly reviews of the actual shows on the archive and direct your opinions about post-Jerry band arrangements on the Forum.

- TimePilot

Given the sudden ascendancy of the issue in general, it seems worth it to have brought up here, thanks! - Diana Hamilton

My only 'moaning' was in that there was a prolific number of posts (all with generally the same content). All exceptionally inflammatory -- the series about lice at GD shows with lots of pronfanity, accusations, etc.

People are entitled to their opinions .. on Phil Lesh, I have none because I haven't heard any of his work of late. But when someone goes that over the top, I'd have no problem pointing out that they're a bit over the top. :)

To the extent that people bring up something for meta-discussion like, "Do we have a general problem with reviews here?" that allow for "teaching moments" before a general audience (like here maybe, "Please don't annoy patrons through reviews" or "Try error reports"), then using the forum can be useful.

I would never advocate using the IA forums for band rants, or even "too much" (heh, a discussion in prior threads) band-specific chatter. For fans of bands, the Dead in particular, there are many band-specific fan forums around the net that are places for speaking your mind and getting interactive with the band's other fans. Please consider using those instead of this forum or the review area. That way you'll reach the right audience for your views. Thanks!

Deciding that it is OK to speak in general terms only sucks, Tito! I went to shows for QUITE a few years and ALWAYS took my kids when it didn't conflict with school or other activities of theirs. My kids, who are 28 and 21 now, have told me several dozen times each that they were VERY glad that they had the childhood that they had. Yes, they saw some bad stuff, but we always talked about it so they knew that there were bad things ALL OVER, not just at Dead shows. They turned out to be very responsible, healthy, good people.

You are, indeed, entitled to your opinion. THAT was what the Dead were all about...EVERYONE being entitled to what they believed. But the forum you chose to make your case is not for that. It is for reviewing the show in question ONLY, not making a soapbox speach about how you feel the remaining members of the band are ripping everyone off. Peace to all...

Roy

And you good people might have wondered why I went off on Tito's reviews. To those I personally offended - i apologize - I tried to delete all of my repulsive posts.
I can't believe you are in this forum Tito. Brad - Dianna, River, I apologize for even responding to this. But...... Tito .. #1 you are truly musically clueless...#2 if you could even play one musical note on a real instrument, I'd hand you my hard worked for business, #3 dont ever put anothers parenting skills down - you have none for good reason - a dog does not count as a child #4 - if you are doing this just to get a rise out of people, you are way too bored #5 lay off the booze - I asked "around" - for the most part you are not liked in the Dead community #6 sorry River for jumping in on this - i know you do not need my opinions of tito to see through what a fool he is.
But to you Tito - thanks for atleast not swearing. If you saw my last post regarding you, I wanted a truce from this kinda stuff. You really dont belong here (and maybe neither do I just because I am responding to this). You really need to broaden your musical horizons beyond just Jerry - I love Jerry - but Jerry is not the be-all-and-end-all of one's musical experience. Please dont dishoner him more than you have. Stick to reviews of show and the quality of those shows.

Hey River,

I know how you feel - neither one of us should probably stoop to that level. On the one hand I feel as you, apologies to the group. On the other hand, there is something perversly entertaining getting him going. Like I said, now that I asked around, I know who he is. Never spoken to him personally, but I know of him. Kind of a dilentante deadhead, if you will. Like you, I will try not to get out of hand with my responses. We all love the dead, most of us love P&F, most of us love Ratdog (i personally even love DSO). Again, sorry for jumping in on his diatribe against your parenting et al. I am a parent of two wonderful little girls and I kinda take offense at that kind of attack. Peace River

I wasn't going to post anything else on this topic, but...you have totally missed my original point which is (as simply as I can put it): rant and rave in the review section all you want! I don't care if you give 1 star ratings! I actually find it refreshing to see some! Just try to rant and rave about that PARTICULAR show and justify the rating for that PARTICULAR show and not about a general topic and/or band. You can do that (as Diana pointed out) in other discussion forums on the net.

Try http://www.tooboard.net/phorum/list.php?6. You won't find me there, though.

"The music is the magic man, whether it be GD, Phil, bobby, Kimock, Phish, or whatever." Agreed and to my ears Jerry songs by someone else SUCK. "I realize that you and tito are against anything not jerry but listen..." Wrong again I listen to lots of non GD, mostly blues & bluegrass.
"when Branford Marsalis plays Coltraine - is that selling out????" No but Brandford wasn't formerly in a band with Coltrane and is now playing second rate versions of his tunes to pretend continuity for money.

its not that i'm insecure in any of my personal musical views. to be honest - i dont think you are either Touch. One of my diffuculties with some of the reviews (not so much yours, but Tito's) is the vitrionic attacks on other peoples opinions of other dead related "jam bands." I've read some of your reviews. To be honest - most of yours are about the sound quality and quality of playing. I do respect that. You seem to be a buddy of Tito's and therefore maybe you are simply defending him. Although even some of Tito's reviews are show oriented, some are just rude attacks - calling someone a c^$t or a pedophile just because they like P&F/ratdog/dso, and telling them they know nothing about the dead or music simply because they are into the spinoffs is just not cool - not "deadlike" for lack of a better term.
Not to repeat myself, but your reviews for the most part keep to the quality of music. You are completely right to say GD pretty much sucked from 92-95. Jerry was sick - it was his fault - he let us down and we all know it. That is what a serious addiction does. But for Tito to slam Phil and Bobby for doing what they love is just wrong. They loved Jerry for the most part. His music should live on whether they are doing it, whether DSO is going it, or whether I am playin it for my children in my own home on my simple acoustic guitar. It is not so much the opinion expressed in some reviews, it is the linguistic manner in which they are conveyed. If you or Tito dont like that Jerry's music is being played by someone other than him, fine. Just dont crucify others for loving the legacy being played in a different way. that is music - it is fluid, it is dynamic, and Jerry just might be smiling when Bobby sings China Cat with ratdog.
Again Touch, your reviews are pretty much cool - i actually pay attention to the 92-95 shows you think are worth downloading. I just have a problem with Tito's ascerbic vulgarities which really serve no purpose. Peace Touch
btw - started in 83 - just a tad behind you

Jerry Didnt Let anyone Down, and i enjoyed the grateful Dead immensly in the 90s,Ill even go as far as saying i like the 90s better than any other decade(because i was at all the shows and can relate).I loved Bob Weirs quirky Fills that he played with the Grateful, its a thing that really wasnt done by any other bands. That being said, the best part of Great Bob songs such as L.L.Rain and Estimated was hands down Garcias Guitar.Even songs like "masterpiece" and "Queen Jane"(both Dylans)my favorite part of those songs was when Jerry would sing the Back-up vocals during the chorus. That was awesome.Sometimes he did it during these songs and sometimes(to my dissappointment)he didnt. If RatDog was to play tonight,i would go,i have no problem with Ratdog.I do have a problem with "The Dead" and"Phil Lesh and Friends"playing Garcias songs.Someone said They are the grateful deads songs and those guys have every right to play them, and Garcia wouldnt care.Hmmm..how many times have you seen Phil Lesh Play a Garcia Classic such as "To Lay Me Down"or Bob Weir blurt out such Classically meaningful lines such as"Someone called my name you know i turned around to see"before Garcia died...you didnt.I will listen to the argument that Ratdog is good and a fun thing togo to(as long as he sticks to his material, there is plenty of it)but Phil Lesh is just a Bassist,I love the guy,i loved Tom Thumbs(great Garcia guiter),but he straight up sucks. My main problem is i have alot of friends from home that started to see GD in like 95 and we when we are talking about things such as
rare GD songs Like say......"St Stephen".Ill say, man, they never played it,i wish i saw it,and someone will say,"i got my St Stephen at alpine 2001."No you didnt..One of the most powerful words in the english language is "ridiculous".That word has been severly cheapened over the years from over use,but if it ever it fit in context perfectly, its in my next sentence.Phil Lesh Singing Jerry Garcias Songs is absolutely RIDICULOUS!
.
Direwolf-How can you say Jerry let you down. The cold facts are that he kept playing right up to a month before he died. The only time i ever remember them canceling a dead show during a tour after 90(when i started going on tour)is Richfield(snow) Orlando(Bills pops died),and Deer Creek(hippy scum ruined it).More likely than not,If the GD didnt do a east coast spring tour, west coast run,and east coast summer tour in 95,Jerry would have lived longer. He did 3 major east coast tours a year in the 90s and EXTENSIVE west coast shows too.He even had runs at the Warfield in between so Jackie,Gloria,Seals,Kahn and that big Crazy dude that replaced Kemper could eat.He had over 100 employees at GDP that had families. He Didnt let anyone down.He helped more people make money Than most charities(which also benefitted form GD shows). You can call me whatever you want,Dont DARE say Garcia let you down. Our Truce has officially come to an end.I am declaring war on you.You touched a sore spot pal.
And No,i have never met touch heads rule.Is it such a surprise that people agree with me?
How can you say that someone who played Live for 30 years over 2500 shows let anybody down?

Didnt intend to tick you off Tito. All I meant my the letdown (maybe a poor choice of words) is the following: Jerry's personal lifestyle combined with his workhorse schedule caused a drop in the quality of his musical proficiency. I did not mean to infer that his death let me down - death happens.
It is just that I watched a genious (and my personal favorite guitarist of all time) erode his own skills during the last 3 years of his life. He is certainly not the only artist to have ever done that and I do not begrudge him his lifestyle choices. I had just always hoped he could pull himself out of it and continue his beautiful potential. his playing gave me some of the happiest musical moments of my life. Sorry if you feel the truce should be broken - hitting a sore spot with you was unintentional.
Peace

If you read his reviews (the ones the thought police haven't deleated)he refers to Hartford as home shows so he's not a Jersey dude. Feel free to email me if you want to discuss shows especially 80s since thats more my era.

hey touch - no more Tito ragging from me (it is getting real old) - thought he said he was from Jersey - my mistake.
You sound like you are from around here too - assuming that since you are a Pat's fan - where ya live?

You have NO idea what kind of parent I am. Speaking again in generalities. You'll never learn, will you? For your information, I am looked at as quite a good parent by all who know me. In fact I have several dozen kids who have decided to call me Dad over the years.

This is not the forum for this conversation however...all we are asking is for you to keep your comments on shows to the quality of the show in question....PLEASE??!!??

Peace to you

Roy

Titos 03-31-05 performance got off to a great start with some tight statements and concise argument, things got a little bit away from Tito midway through the set, but he recovered nicely and ended with his classic "Korean boys in the basement" line...I'll give this one 3 stars

I have been sitting here for the last couple of days watching this conversation and thought I might give you my perspective, if you care. I think the that we have found the "forum" for Tito to speak his mind. Not in the review section. Let's be serious, 1 star for a Phil show is unreasonable considering all the shit music that is out there. If the sound sucks well there you go, but cutting and pasting the same rants on all the Phil show reviews is, well, childish. Maybe this is what you want, to allow you , and your anger to be the center of attention. Which is childish. And although you come off as a clown, you have our attention. It doesn't surprise me in this culture that you should emerge.

As far as your take on the band etc. It doesn't matter how many shows you went to, that is irrelevant. millions in this country go to church every day/week and have no concept of Christianity or compassion. George Bush is a perfect example. But I don't mean to get on a political rant. Any one can walk into a concert hall and hear music. At your own account you did it at least some 300 times. That's great. No one should tell you how that should effect you or how you should feel about the others listening to the music with you. Hell, as we all know 2 people can "hear" completely different "shows". What one finds euphoric another can find mundane. That is what the reviews are for. Not your self centered, childish bullshit. No one is trying to censor you we are just telling you that we got your point, go find another forum/ community that wants to hear your crap and set up your soap box and go to it

Since all a review on LMA usually means is what did I think of this show/recording lets not become friggin Nazis by saying what is "reasonable". My pointing out that IN MY OPINION a certain 95 show sucked ass is as valid as some newbie seeing his first show that same night giving it 5 stars (thus elevating it to Barton Hall, Veneta etc status.)

to the admins: is it too expensive to put in place a "vulgarity censorship program.?" Many of the online poker sites use this - it justs puts in asterisks in place of the censored word. I certainly realize the poker sites have tremendous monetary resources and I have no idea how much this would cost Archive. At least this would allow "unbannable" people to immaturely voice their opinions without having the posting appear quite so crude - just a thought.

Personally, I don't think we'd want encourage people to voice their opinions "immaturely" even if starred-out. Rather, we'd want to cheer people on just to voice themselves in a *mature* way in the first place, don't you think?

Despite what you have seen or contributed to yourself in the last several days, strong language has been a tiny fraction of all communications here.

You're missing the point. There's nothing wrong with this, and nobody ever claimed there was. The problem that caused all of this was the delivery. If you don't like the recording, give it 1 star, tell us why it was no good and go find another recording to listen to. But don't drop the F-BOMB 17 times in your review so our inbox fills up with angry parents telling us the collection is no longer suitable for their kids... (no joke)

Ok? Believe it or not it IS possible to execute free speech and civility at the same time.

No sense in getting into a semantic argument. Perhaps, reasonable, was a wrong word. Nor am I suggesting that we rate the quality of reviewers by how many shows etc. All I am saying is that the same review for every show is not a review of a show, rather it is opinion of the band. therefore, relatively speaking if Tito wants to start opining on the quality of bands in the universe there are more "reasonable" places to start. Otherwise, I don't see this as a Gestapo tactic here and see no reason to bring out the N-word. All I am saying is that Tito's adolescent attempt for attention has been accomplished and his Opinion of P&F's is duly noted.
